Dunedin Beekeepers Club Hobby Bee Keeping Introductory Course.

There has been an increase in the interest in bee keeping.  We now have a number of new members, and will be holding a course called “Hobby Bee Keeping Intro” which will have a theory and practical half day.
New BK’s can get hold of hives, suits and all the bits of bee keeping, the big problem is to get hold of bees.  This can be achieved most easily by buying bees from an established BK, or by a swarm which may be quite difficult in the years to come.  Most of our established BK’s are reluctant to provide bees for a new BK who has no training in keeping bees.  We have arranged a simple introductory course of  4 hours of theory, and 4 hours of practical beekeeping would be enough to get you started – and a mentor or buddy would be essential to advise you and look over your shoulder now and then.
The goals are that the student learn some essential theory of bee keeping, and the simple practical issue of how to open a hive safely.
The course will be 2 half days, on 19 and 26 September 2015, from 1 PM to 5 PM – the place of the theory will be announced in the week before the course starts, and the practical will be divided up into different apiaries.  The cost will be $60, and $30 for membership of the club.
A hive and bees will not be part of the course.  You also need to have your own gear such as suit or veil, smoker, and hive tool – or you can borrow what you need from a beekeeper.  Don’t plan on being close to an open hive just wearing a veil, use a full suit.
The tutors will be Otto Hyink and Tudor Caradoc-Davies

AFB TRAINING REVISION 5:30 PM Thursday 23 July 2015 45 Maori Road, Belleknowes, Dunedin.

Hi,

You may have received information about the The AFB Management Agency free AFB training that they are offering, organised by Brice Horner in Dunedin.

He is required to record the name and beekeeping number of all people who attend, for the Agencies records. This training will constitute the required “refresher training” for those who already hold a DECA so their attendance needs to be noted.

Note that this is intended for those who already hold the DECA, but others are welcome to attend but there will be no recognition.

All future refresher courses will incur a cost of $20 per student but there will be no charge for Dunedin Beekeepers Club members. People from outside the club will be required to pay the $20 fee.

The session will take place on Thursday 23 July 2015 at 5:00 for 5:30 PM, we will make a cup of tea and biccies available before the session which will last from 5:30 until 7:00 PM.

The meeting will be held in the Malcam Trust rooms which are used by the Dunedin Beekeepers Club, at 45 Maori Road, Belleknowes, Dunedin, 9016, just next to Jubilee Park.  Just use Maps:Google to find it, or go up Serpentine Road and turn right into Maori Road, then turn right about 100 m along. There is quite a lot of parking on site.

Please let us know your intention to attend for catering purposes, if you have not already done this.

Kind regards,

Tudor Caradoc-Davies

Secretary Otago NBA
